Short answerFor a first trip to Menorca, base yourself in Ciutadella for two nights and Mahón for one, renting a car for at least part of the trip. Day 1 explore Ciutadella old town and nearby beaches; Day 2 drive to the north coast beaches and Es Mercadal; Day 3 head to Mahón and the east coast. Buses can fill gaps, but a car gives you the freedom to reach remote calas.

01

Why this itinerary works

Menorca is small, about 48 km long and 16 km wide, so you can see a lot in three days without rushing. The island is split between the former capital Ciutadella in the west and the current capital Mahón in the east, with the interior in between. Travellers report that renting a car is practically mandatory if you want to explore beyond the main towns, but you can also use buses for some legs.

This plan uses Ciutadella as your main base because travellers report it is preferred over Mahón as a base, and it puts you close to many of the west coast's best beaches. You will move to Mahón for the last night to explore the east and be closer to the airport for departure. If you prefer not to drive, you can still follow this itinerary using buses, but expect longer travel times and fewer beach options.

Day1

Ciutadella old town and west coast beaches

Start in Ciutadella. Wander the old town centre, which is studded with medieval Gothic architecture. Visit the Ciutadella Cathedral (adult €6, includes the Diocesan Museum) and the sumptuous merchant mansion Casa Olivar (adult €5). For a unique experience, head to Líthica (Pedreres de s'Hostal), a sandstone quarry converted into gardens with a stone maze (adult €9).

In the afternoon, pick a nearby beach. Cala de Santandria, Cala Blanca, and Cala en Blanes are all a short drive or bus ride away. Bus 61 runs every 30 minutes from Calas Picas, Cala en Forcat, Los Delfines and Cala en Blanes; Bus 64 runs hourly from Santandria, Cala Blanca, and Sa Caleta. If you have a car, consider Cala Morell (Bus 62 four times a day) or the more remote Cala en Bosch.

For sunset, head to Pont d'en Gil, a viewpoint near Ciutadella. Dinner in Ciutadella's old town offers plenty of options; travellers report that local festivities in summer are a good way to meet people.

Local tip

If you want to avoid the crowds at Cala Turqueta, arrive before 9am in July, as parking is usually full by then. Alternatively, use Bus 68, which runs hourly from Ciutadella (Monday to Saturday), but check timetables again in July because they change.

Day2

North coast beaches and Es Mercadal

Drive or take a bus to the north coast. The beaches of Cavallería, Binimel·là, and Pregonda have vehicular access and are busy in summer. For something quieter, Cala Pregonda is a short hike from the parking area and offers stunning red sand. If you are based in Ciutadella without a car, you can take Bus 62 to Cala Morell, but for the northern beaches a car is much easier.

Stop in Es Mercadal, the central town named after the Latin word for market. Visit the summit of El Toro, the highest point on the island at 342 m, for panoramic views. There is a monastery, cafe, and shop at the top. Also see the 18th-century British-built cistern S'Aljub des Mercadal.

For lunch or dinner, try Ca n'Olga in Es Mercadal for Mediterranean cuisine, or The Windmill Restaurant (Es Moli D'es Raco) in a 300-year-old windmill. If you continue to Fornells, Es Cranc is one of the finest restaurants in Menorca; try the shellfish soup 'Caldereta'. In the evening, return to Ciutadella or stay in Es Mercadal.

Day3

Mahón and east coast

Drive east to Mahón (Maó), the island capital, which has the second largest natural deep water port in the world. Explore the harbour, visit the Museu de Menorca, and see the Fortalesa de la Mola. For art, Hauser & Wirth is a must-see gallery in a former naval hospital on Illa del Rei in the harbour.

In the afternoon, head to the east coast beaches. Cala Binibèquer is a short drive from Mahón and has a charming whitewashed village. Cala Binidalí and Cala en Porter are also nearby. If you have time, the beach at Son Bou is recommended by travellers. For a scenic viewpoint, stop at Mirador del Pont des Castell.

If you are flying out the next day, staying in Mahón puts you close to the airport (7 km southeast). Buses 1 and 14 run from Mahón to Ciutadella every 30 minutes, taking an hour, so you can also return to Ciutadella if needed. In the evening, enjoy Mahón's restaurant scene; travellers recommend Jardí de ses Bruixes for brunch.

Transport logic and practicalities

Renting a car is the most flexible way to get around. Travellers report that it is practically mandatory. Book in advance, especially in summer. Take the cheapest rate that includes full coverage with no excess to avoid damage charges. If you use a cheap rate without full coverage, inspect the car for marks and damage before driving, compare with the damage report, and make a full 360 video stopping at every imperfection. All rental companies will charge for gas if the car is not returned completely full. Note that you cannot pay a car rental deposit with a debit card; a credit card is required.

Buses are a good backup. TMSA buses 1 and 14 run from Mahón to Ciutadella every 30 minutes, taking an hour. Torres buses serve nearby resort villages from Ciutadella. In off season, buses to beaches in tourism areas run on the hour every hour rather than every 20 minutes like in main season, and buses are usually cheaper in off season. Remote beaches may have only a couple of buses a day running near them, if any at all.

Taxis are available but can be expensive. A taxi from Menorca airport to Cala en Bosc costs €80; return trip costs €70 (reported by a user). Post-festival taxi availability is unreliable; the Menorca Taxi App and calling taxi business numbers both feel like a lottery.
